As we look ahead at the most exciting home design trends moving into the New Year, it’s hard to ignore area rugs!

Area rugs in general will continue to be a really key component of interior design – perhaps growing in popularity over time – for at least the next decade, if not longer. This is exciting news for all of us here at Rugs.Shop! Rugs are our passion, and to celebrate the New Year we’ve assembled a list of some of the latest and greatest trends in area rugs heading into 2019.

Layered area rug looks are in

Up until recently, minimalism has been the focus for many designers. Kiss that trend goodbye, though! Layers and patterns are in, and area rugs are a great way to pull this trend off.

Try laying smaller rugs on top of large ones, skewing the placement for visual and textural contrast between the two layers. A popular look is a colorful or patterned rug laid on top of a flat, natural material like sisal. Below are some great examples of this look.

Another clever pairing of organic materials with contrasting patterns! The grey rug pictured here is Delmar Boho Dots by Novogratz.
Keep an eye out for Ikat designs

Ikat rug designs feature a characteristic “blurriness,” a result of the extreme difficulty that traditional Indonesian hand-weavers had in creating perfect patterns using the dyed yarns in their rugs. This blurriness came to be seen not as a flaw, but as a defining feature of ikat rugs. Now that pattern is making a comeback in modern interior design. Some of our favorite ikat designs from Momeni and Nourison are featured below.

Use rugs to create a Boho vibe

Bohemian, or “Boho,” style is all about inviting life and global culture into the home in unique and interesting ways. Today’s younger homeowners are particularly significant proponents of Boho. You can complement or steer your boho design with a rug that meets one or more of the following criteria:

  • Warm, earthy base colors such as deep browns, greens, and grays
  • Bold, bright highlight colors such as fiery reds and electric blues
  • Unconventional pairings, such as a natural, earthy rug layered under a bright one
  • Worn or used looks
  • Natural materials such as sisal

Fringe is going mainstream

Have a little fun and add some tassels to your design this year! Tassels and fringe are a touchable texture that gives your rugs some character and highlights their presence on your floor. Make a statement with one of these great rugs from

Nourison’s Nomad collection, available from Rugs.Shop!

One trend across all soft surface flooring this year, including both carpeting and area rugs, is the use of blue as a base tone. Blue can be calming and serene, or bold, bright and strong. A nice transition away from the normal neutrals we usually see in flooring, blues, particularly with a hint of grey mixed in, are definitely here to stay.

Momeni’s Afshar perfectly mixes both blue and grey to capitalize on the blue flooring trend!

We’ve got our eyes on a few key players in the rug game this year. These names have all been selling like wildfire at Rugs.Shop recently. These are some stylish collections that you definitely can’t miss out on this year!

From Karastan’s collaboration with the Scott Brothers of HGTV comes the Scott Living line. Two standouts from Scott Living are the Expressions collection, featuring bold colors and geometric designs, and the Artisan collection, featuring a metallic shimmer unlike anything we’ve seen!

Another impressive new Karastan collection is Vintage Tapis, a result of their collaboration with designer Patina Vie. This collection is a great way to incorporate the Boho vibes trend we mentioned earlier in the post!

Stepping away from Karastan for a moment, another hot collection is Moroccan Shag by Nourison. A great example of the use of fringe and tassels, this collection emphasizes the contrast that can be created using simple neutrals and basic geometric shapes, resulting in a rather elegant look that works well in a variety of rooms.
